Open Source and Proprietary Software: The Search for a Profitable Middle-GroundNosko, Chris, Garcia-Swartz, Daniel D. and Layne-Farrar, Anne, "Open Source and Proprietary Software: The Search for a Profitable Middle-Ground" (August 2004). Abstract:
We take a closer look at both kinds of companies to illustrate how very different sorts of developers are moving towards a fruitful convergence. We conclude that open source companies are more likely to succeed if they can use open-source products as entree into domains protected by traditional intellectual property, and that proprietary companies can benefit from open-source software development without abandoning revenues from intellectual property. Open source and proprietary development models remain distinct, but we predict that less software will be licensed at either extreme in the future. Facts on IBM SoftwareVersion 2 of the ObjectGrid is currently under development for shipping in XD 6.0.1. It will add significant function to the component as well as widen JDK level support. The intent is to allow customers to build large grids of JVMs in to which they can connect applications and store objects at various qualities of service. The grid is being designed to scale to 1000s of JVMs and hold a large quantity of data. Lotus Software (called Lotus Development Corporation before its acquisition by IBM) is an American software company with its headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Lotus was founded in 1982 by partners Mitch Kapor and Jonathan Sachs. Lotus' first product was presentation software for the Apple II known as Lotus Executive Briefing System, but the company is more broadly known for its groundbreaking Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet application released in January 1983. Rose originated to support Ada programming. It currently supports C++ and Java. Unlike many programming artifacts, which developers retain and maintain, Rose Models merely form a stage in the development of a program This site is growing and will contain info on subjects like lotus notes archiving, cics websphere interface and rational unified process (RUP). | ||||
