Freesourcing - A Competitive Advantage in Information Era

Freesourcing - A Competitive Advantage in Information Era

Kumar, Anil Dhyani, Sarkar, Saukhin, Saxena, Amit, Tripathi, Alok and Moeller, Martina, "Freesourcing - A Competitive Advantage in Information Era" (April 24, 2002). MIT Ecommerce Research Forum Working Paper.

Abstract:

We quite often hear this "There's no money in bits and bytes anymore and software is moving away from the licensed model to the leased and subscriptions approach where the money will be in Web service contracts. This will suit the open source business model (Freesourcing Business Model) down to the ground," or "Companies are increasingly looking for better ways to manage their IT infrastructure and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO)".

So lets try and understand what it really means to the corporates.

We will see how Freesourcing can be a competitive advantage? Utilizing 'scenario planning', we will try to analyze what Freesourcing is and how beneficial it can be finally in the cost saving efforts of a company; how, in today's information dominant scenarios it can lead to the tangible increase in stakeholders value and How companies can share this cost reduction with their end customers, giving them 'delight proposition'.

Facts on IBM Software

IBM WebSphere Application Server works with a number of Web servers including Apache, Netscape Enterprise and Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) as well as IBM HTTP Server for AS/400, IBM HTTP Server for OS/390 and IBM HTTP Server for AIX, Windows NT, Solaris.

It has been repeatedly alleged that in 1997 the NSA had backdoored the export version of Notes, but this is a mis-characterization of what actually happened. Prior to that year, Lotus had been restricted from exporting software that used encryption keys that were longer than 40 bits by United States law. Under an agreement with the US government, Lotus was allowed to start exporting 64 bit keys, so long as 24 bits of each key were recoverable using a special key issued by Lotus to the NSA. The result was that the newer version of Lotus Notes provided stronger protection against industrial espionage than any previous version had been allowed to provide, and it provided no less protection against decryption by the NSA than the previous versions had given. (US export regulations were changed in 2001, so current versions of Lotus products are able to use longer keys and they no longer provide NSA with access to any key bits.)

Rose originated to support Ada programming. It currently supports C++ and Java. Unlike many programming artifacts, which developers retain and maintain, Rose Models merely form a stage in the development of a program
